The Queer Child - SET Woolwich - 07/2025 - Curation

The Queer Child (by Growing Sideways Projects) was a multidisciplinary show at SET Woolwich's exhibition space throughout July 2025. We brought together a group of queer, FLINTA* artists (Women, Lesbians, Inter, Non-binary and Agender*) including a queer choir, perfomance artists, film makers and fine artists into a month long exhibition.

The concept refers to queer academic Kathryn Bond Stockton’s theory, ‘Growing Sideways’, which describes how queer individuals grow in non-linear paths towards non-conventional goals. The exhibition investigated how the FLINTA* community grow outside the constraints of expectations such as religion, marriage, and children, instead setting their own paths. We focused on celebration of failure as a form of liberation—rejecting the rigid structures of success defined by heteronormativity. The show represented personal fables, queerness within religious structures, and symbols of ‘cultural queerness’ in relation to the wider themes of community and space.
